Effect of Heat.

This blog post is to show all the knowledge our class has learned over the past few weeks in chemistry.

Contraction (Imploding Can)                                                                                          A couple of weeks ago we experimented to teach us about contraction, contraction is when something and something contracts (becomes smaller). When we did the experiment we lit the Bunsen burner, once we lit the Bunsen burner, the heat of the flame made the water slowly turn into steam. Once the water finally started to turn to steam we picked up the tongs and flipped the can into an ice cream container full of cold water. Unfortunately, our experiment didn't work and it failed. What's supposed to happen is when you flip the can into the ice cream container the can is supposed to contract and become smaller from the warm and cold particles moving around quickly.

Expansion (Ball and hoop)                                                                                               Expansion is when something becomes more extensive. We did an experiment to learn about expansion we started up a Bunsen burner and put the ball over the flame. As the flame heated the ball it caused it to expand making it not fit through the hoop as it did before.

Conduction (Dropping Pins)

Conduction is the process when heat energy is transmitted through a solid, making the particles vibrate more and more. The experiment we did the learn about conduction is where you set up a Bunsen burner and put a metal rod on a clip (with 5 pins covered in Vaseline stuck to the rod). After that, you put the Bunsen burner under the end of the rod then wait. Eventually, the pins should fall off one by one because the particles in the rod starting to vibrate (caused by the flame of the Bunsen burner.

Convection in liquid (pomegranate crystals in water)

Convection occurs when particles with a lot of heat energy in a liquid or gas move and take the place of particles with less heat energy. When experimenting to learn about convection in liquid we lit a Bunsen burner and placed a glass beaker on top of the stand. When we were ready we dropped a pomegranate crystal into the water through a straw. The heat from the flame made the color of the dissolving crystal circulate until fully dissolved into the water.

Convection in gas (Teabag rockets)

Convection in gas is the transfer of heat by the movement of gas between areas of different temperatures. To teach our class what convection in gas was we experimented with teabags and fire. Firstly we tipped the tea out of the teabag then we stoop the tea bag up straight. Once that was done we were given a box of matches to light the top of our teabag. As the fire spread to the bottom the teabag floated up to the ceiling, spreading ashes all through the room.

My Learning Story

Hurumanu: 2 Humanities

Module: Power to the People

Name: Lily Barry

Teacher: Ds

Term: 2

Reflection:

Give at least three examples in each of the boxes below.

What We Did:

  • Types of government

  •  Informational poster

  • Political party group

What I Learned:

  •  What different governments do

  •  How we can improve the environment

  • Information about Nancy Wake

My Favourite Parts:

  • Making the poster

  • Learning about nancy wake and her back story

  • Making the types of government slide

My Next Steps:

  • To try as hard as i can to do my best

  •  Get as much information and research as i can

  • Help others so they can do well if they are behind

CARR Values:

Make a statement below describing how you showed each of our CARR values during this Hurumanu.

Commitment

By committing to our group work and everyone taking part in our political party

Achievement

    Presenting our politicle presentation

Resilience

Doing work at home because i was behind for a little bit.

Respect

Respecting the other groups when presenting

Feedback for my Teachers:

I enjoyed all the work we have done in social studies and i would like to do it again next term.

English Essay (Animal testing should be illegal)

Sadly animal testing is a big issue in our world because it's unnecessary, puts animals in pain, and is sometimes even ineffective.

Animal testing should be illegal because it put animals through unnecessary pain. For example, when researchers are testing sometimes they connect a tube to the animals and pump products into their stomachs until side effect shows. In addition to that some testing animals are forced to inhale toxic fumes, others are immobilized in restraint devices for hours, some have holes drilled into their skulls, and others have their skin burned off or their spinal cords crushed. This proves that animal testing is very painful for animals and can mentally and physically scar them for life.

Animal testing sometimes is ineffective. When researchers test on animals the results can come out different on animals than humans because the animals they are testing on have different skin, eyes, and elements in their bodies. Which it's also proven that 92% of the time testing is not accurate. On another note, if animal testing isn't accurate 92% of the time that means that when we buy products and use them it can give us rashes, allergic reactions, and irritated skin/eyes.

Testing on animals would be more effective if you test the products on things with similar particles as the skin. Determined researchers don't even realize that they could be testing on things that would give them more accurate results on humans.

To sum up, everything that has been stated animal testing should be illegal because it is so unfair on the animals, inaccurate 92% of the time and there are better ways products can be tested.
